I paint in oils on canvas, but also on unconventional surfaces, such as exotic wood veneers from all over the world. To name just a few: Macassar Ebony grows natively in the jungles of the East Indies. It makes for breathtakingly beautiful veneer, famous for its signature light-and-dark variegation, vertical grain, and striping figure. Santos Rosewood is a gorgeous veneer, coming from Brazil, when I can get it. It has unbelievable grain patterns, and beautiful golden tan and red colors. Mappa Burl veneer, also known as European Black Poplar, has wonderful color combinations that often varies from light tan to a beautiful gold with dark red/brown burl pockets. Originally from Western Europe, Mappa is the only species of poplar that develops this rare type of burl formation. The Mappa Burl I use comes directly from the Ukraine. It’s a wonderful, exciting adventure to learn about the properties of the different woods and the countries they represent.
With a BFA from the College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning at the University of Cincinnati, I continue to apply my formal education in printmaking and painting to oils,mixed media, drypoints, pen and ink illustration, and encaustics.
